Vocal Ear Training

Yes, this is based on the requirements of the Royal Conservatory of Music Voice Syllabus, but  highly beneficial for any program of study. Please refer to The Royal Conservatory of Music Voice Syllabus for specific requirements.

A single audio CD and answer booklet.  The CD tracks of the Vocal Ear Training series contain verbal instructions, plus music exercises that use grand piano sounds.  Most answers are recorded on the CD but rhythm and melody exercises are in the answer booklet.

Most singers who practice ear training exercises use piano for accompaniment.  Usually this produces a more consistent sound with pitch that is readily identifiable.

You could use the Vocal Ear Training series with an  instrument, however, the range of notes would be limited to what the  series targets for voice- medium vocal range- Middle C  to upper E flat.

For an instrument, we recommend the Comprehensive Ear Training series.  The instrument sound on the series is a piano, and the exercises are played in the treble and bass clefs. Most people can adapt their listening skills with their own instrument to the piano.  The Standard MIDI file version will allow you to change the instrument sound, and also to transpose the music to your desired clef.

The Royal Conservatory of Music is an internationally recognized examination system based in Canada. As a leading school of music, The Royal Conservatory of Music has produced distinguished musicians acclaimed throughout the world.  The RCM publishes a syllabus detailing the required standards for students wishing to take an examination which are available in progressive levels.  The Comprehensive Ear Training series is listed as recommended reference material in the RCM syllabus.  If you are using a different exam system,  the exercises in our series will be similar to the requirements in your system and each grade moves progressively through more difficult and complex requirements.  Please click HERE to see what is presented in each grade and to find the most appropriate grade for your level.

If you’ve never used an examination system for learning, no problem!  You can  be very comfortable using the Vocal Ear Training series, knowing you are improving at a gradual, systematic step-by-step progression of technique and ability.

The range of these exercises is from approximately Middle C to upper E flat.  To accommodate lower bass voices, simply  sing down one octave.
